happy hour hhm ramblings | selfish or deserving?

As moms we tend to put the needs of our family before our own. Here at Happy Hour Mom we make it a point to encourage you moms out there to take a happy hour a day for yourself. One hour. Sounds simple enough, but it is surprisingly one of the more difficult tasks to accomplish. After my first child I found it nearly impossible to have a second to myself. I wouldn’t trade motherhood for anything in the world, and I happily take on the responsibility, but that doesn’t mean I don’t need a break. My extent of a break is when I can sit down and watch TV with a baby attached to my boob, and believe me, this is no break.  I can’t even take a shower anymore without a four year old popping her head in and a one year old screaming her head off.  Sometimes I even take a magazine in the bathroom and sit against the door and take a 10 minute “mommy time” break while trying to ignore the continuous knocking on the door and notes being slipped under the crack. Can a mom not even go to the bathroom? – so what if I am pretending, that’s not the point.

Beyond the value of our time, so many of us moms stop taking care of ourselves completely.  When was the last time you had a pedicure? Bought yourself an item of clothing? Some new shoes? If you’re anything like me it’s been a while. I have a hard time justifying buying something for myself when I know the girls need shoes, or my husband needs some new shirts. Why is that? When I get money for my birthday I can’t even bring myself to go shopping for me-besides, my daughter loved her new books.  But it was my birthday, didn’t I deserve to go shopping? Why do I feel so guilty just thinking about getting a pedicure? Those toes could feed my entire family a meal and a half. (Well not the actual toes, but the money I spend on them, ew). But don’t we deserve to have Mom time? My bras are two sizes too small, and my pants don’t fit because I am still between preggers and pre-baby weight so don’t I NEED these things? Absolutely. But I still can’t bring myself to fully get that. We need to remember that we are not being selfish when we do something for ourselves we actual deserve it at times. Imagine that, we deserve it! So the next time you have a few extra bucks, and can’t decide if you should get that massage or buy a new toy…get that massage! You’ve earned it.
