On one of our recent episodes of Happy Hour Mom Live!, we discussed the ability to manipulate the sex of your baby. So many people have gotten to the point where they want to control every aspect of their lives, even to the point of actually wanting to control the sex of their baby. What ever happened to the mystery and excitement of waiting? Don’t get me wrong, I have two girls and would love to have a boy, but I think it’s a little creepy to think about the fact that I can manipulate the sex of that little fetus that will be growing inside of me. In my opinion there is too much interference going on and we were not intended to have that sort of power. I also fear that if this process becomes to popular, we will start having “Super Babies.” If only the “strongest” sperm survive and become our children, are we going to start manipulating the future of our entire human race? It sounds extreme, I know, I am playing a little bit of the devil’s advocate and pointing out the extreme scenario, but I really believe that we are crossing lines when we start to manipulate the sex of our babies. Ideally, I wish I could pick out a boy for my next pregnancy, but this is not the mall, I don’t get to try things on and send it back if I don’t like how it “fits” into my life goals of having a perfectly balanced household. I know many of you would do what it takes to pick the gender, and I respect your choice, it just worries me. At what point do we draw the line in manipulating the selection of sperm? In some cases, and I believe the reason for these methods to begin with, the selection of sperm is to help those who have gender-based genetic disorders in their genes. There are many sites available with studies and research to provide you with the advantages, disadvantages, and success rate of the different options available to you. I personally found IN-Gender.com to be informative and factual. They discuss the highly effective MicroSort Sperm Sorting, as well as the PGD, Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis.
Regardless of your opinion, scientifically or morally, we would love to know what you think. So tell me, do you think manipulating gender is crossing the line?
