After the ongoing controversy surrounding Baby Einstein Videos, Disney is offering refunds of $15.99 each (4 per household) for all Baby Einstein videos purchased between June 5, 2003 and September 4, 2009. Many feel as thought there was false advertising involved with the claim that the videos would help mold “smarter” children, and Disney is giving these individuals the opportunity to receive a refund. I personally think this is a little bogus. Those children in the studies who watched the videos and who aren’t “as smart” were obviously spending more time in front of the TV alone than they were interacting with their parents. The videos are sweet, they use vibrant colors, have beautiful music playing, and most importantly, are loved by nearly every mommy I know. Of course a video isn’t going to make your child smarter, but your sitting down with them and teaching them about the music on the video and name the shapes as they come across will help them to learn. I still love the videos and will use them myself, not as a babysitter, but more as a tool.
What are your thoughts? Will you keep your Baby Einstein videos or will you send them back to Disney?

I won’t put the link here and “steal your sunshine” so to speak, but I posted to a blog that I keep for son with Asperger’s, on the very thing you mention. People need to come to an understanding that TV shows, books, teaching toys, etc… are all practically worthless, if they are not paired with parental interaction. Sitting a child in front of the TV and not making yourself available for their questions or even just idle chit chat is a huge mistake. My children have gained so much from educational shows and are very bright, but it is only because I or one of their older siblings watch with them and use the shows as a tool, instead of a sitter. I have never had these videos but I do have the books and think they are absolutely wonderful.
