It may be hard to believe, but your nails say a lot about you. We re not talking nail polish selection either (although that may something about your personality), we are talking health. What do your nails look like? Well manicured or not, do they hold certain distinct characteristics? Are they a particular color (minus the polish of course)? do they have ridges? do they have dark colored lines running through them? white lines? square-shaped? weak and flat? These characteristics are just a selection of those that can give you insight into your health. I recently read a story about a blogger whose family member found out she had Lung Cancer based on a Doctor’s recognition of her nails. Hers were cracking and bubbly, indicating that she was receiving very little oxygen as her fingertips were basically suffocating. What are your nails saying, and what does it mean? In particular, this site has some suggestions for the meaning behind discolored nails:
- Bacterial infection
- Candidiasis
- Yellow nail syndrome
- Onycholysis
- Senile ischemia (onychogryphosis)
- Drug hypersensitivity (e.g. tetracycline)
- Malnutrition
- Chronic lung diseases
- Liver disease
- Heart disease
- Kidney disease
- Trauma
- Staining from nail varnish or cosmetic products
- Tobacco use
The health an state of your nails can alert you to the things your body needs more of (vitamins, oxygen, etc.) Here is more “nail code” to help you stay in touch with your body and what your nails are trying to tell you:
Nail texture:
Vertical ridges: Possible iron deficiency, poor absorption of vitamins and nutrients, overall poor health or kidney trouble.
Vertical ridges and bumpy nails: May indicate arthritis
Horizontal ridges: May indicate physical or mental stress.
White-lined bands across the nail: Possible protein deficiency.
Dry and frail nails: Calcium deficiency
The “white spot”: Could be an iron or zinc deficiency, however it may indicate a more serious disorder.
