When is it safe to give my baby a lovey in his bed at night?? My son is 6 months old and I want to get him hooked on a blankie or a stuffed animal. Or both like my 3 year old. He has a blankie and a stuffed goat named Chivo (his first Spanish word)!
Think back to when, and how, your 3-year-old got “hooked” on both his goat and his blankie. Typically, babies choose what they love, and they choose in their own time. If we could choose for them every child would be dragging around the gift given to them by their parents favorite person and/or the cutest or trendiest of all their belongings.
My daughter had two quilted blankets, one I made and one generously given to me by a woman who celebrated my long awaited pregnancy, though I really didn’t know her well. Of course, I would have preferred Jacquelyn favor the quilt I made, or the pink cotton blanket her daddy bought the week she was born, but nope, she picked the blankie made a woman she would never meet.
Her “lovey” was a Puff-a-Lump. She had a white rabbit Puff-a-Lump from the time she was born. We snuggled it in her car seat and in her bed (at that time there were no recommendations against soft items in the crib), she was not particularly interested.
For Christmas, when she was 10-months-old she got a pink bear Puff-a-Lump. I don’t think it left her hand from the very first day (truth be told you could find the pink bear Puff-a-Lump and the blankie in her apartment, today).
Even though your children are only three, and 6 months, they are developing their own interests, desires, and preferences. Embrace and celebrate those developing personalities and watch to see provides them comfort and piques their interests.
