As the holiday season is officially underway, with Thanksgiving just days away, we must remind ourselves what it is we are celebrating. So often we get caught up in great food, holiday decor, festive songs, and of course, presents, nearly forgetting what the holiday means entirely. So let’s see if you are smarter than a fifth grader with these back-to-the-basics Thanksgiving facts. Here are some fun and unusual facts you may not know, followed by a short quiz to see just how much you remember about the history of Thanksgiving.

Fun Facts:
*In 1621 the first Thanksgiving took place in Plymouth Colony (currently Massachusetts).
*The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days
*200 years later, Thanksgiving was officially declared a national “day of giving thanks” by President Lincoln, and set to occur every year during the last week of November.
*It wasn’t until 1941 that it was declared a National holiday.
*Sarah Josepha Hale, the author of “Mary had a Little Lamb,” had a huge role in Thanksgiving’s journey to declaration as an official holiday.
*Minnesota is considered the top turkey-producing state in the country.
*46 million turkeys were consumed on Thanksgiving Day in 2007.
*The first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade took place in 1924 in New York.
*Snoopy has appeared in the parade more than any other animal character in history.
