Yes, there is actually a day designated for you to give away that gift you received and will never use. That’s right, while 364 days out of the year don’t allow for it, you actually have the go ahead to regift. Are you a regifter? Do you need a designated day to feel okay about regifting? I am usually afraid to regift because I really don’t want to get caught. Sometimes I can’t remember who gave me the gift to begin with, or I am worried that the original gift giver will find out somehow. If I gave a gift and found out someone gave it away I don’t think I woud be mad, but I do think I would feel bad that I gave someone something that they didn’t want. It would be especially disturbing if it were a gift that I had really put thought into. Fortunately, most regifted items are those that are generic to begin with. (i.e., candles, bubble bath and lotion sets, coffee mugs/thermoses, even gift cards) Before you get your panties in a bunch when you find out one of your gifts has been regifted, review a few of the reasons why someone would regift:

.

1) They already have the item you gave them

2) It is the wrong size, doesn’t fit right

3) They just flat out don’t like it

4) They don’t have a lot of $ to spend on gifts this year so they HAD to regift (even though they really did like the gift)

5) They knew someone who really wanted/needed the item you gave them–they may like it but knew someone who would REALLY appreciate it

.

These are just some of the reasons some people may regift, and not all of them are negative, some are actually thoughtful and selfless. We would love to know your thoughts on regifting, share them below. You can also read some Regifting Stories on Regiftable.com. Here are a couple of my faves that I found there:

Facebook Flub By: Joy B. |  From: Harlingen, TX  |  Posted: 12/16/2009

Well I regifted a rather weird seashell picture frame at a white elephant style party gift exchange. The participants knew it was for fun and the group I was with had no connection to the friend that gave me the frame. So all was good until the next day. A friend from the party posted a picture of someone holding the regifted picture frame and making a sorry face. I was also in the picture and was tagged. Before I realized this the friend who gave me the frame in the first place saw the picture on my facebook profile and knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that I had not “loved” the frame as I had told her.

Christmas Door Prize |  By: Kristin M.  |  From: Mesa, AZ  |  Posted: 12/16/2009

I was at one of my close friends Christmas Party one year. During the party they gave out a door prize and I won it! When she gave it to me it looked very familiar. It was the Bridesmaid gift I gave to her for being in my wedding the month before!

REGIFT? WHY NOT? | By: Michele S. | From: Johnsn City, TN | Posted: 12/15/2009

I work at a preschool and for Christmas we get lots of gifts. Right before Christmas break, I needed to buy a gift for my 1st graders teacher. I had gotten many nice gifts from the kids in my class. I debated whether or not to regift. This one gift was really regiftable. It was a nice thermos. I don’t drink coffee so I regifted it to her teacher. Its a great teacher gift, after all I had just gotten it for a teacher gift myself . To rationalize that I had spent $0 on her gift, I thought I work in her class 1 day a week for the entire school year. The teacher sent it back to me and said I had given her the wrong gift. Best part, when I had gotten the gift myself I didn’t open the box, I just wrapped and regifted! Only problem, the thermos had my NAME ENGRAVED on it! Everyone had a good laugh. I learned…Regift Responsibly and always open what you are regifting before you regift!
