If you are a regular reader of HHM, you know that Toni and I travel the world following the hopes, dreams, and careers of our husbands. Now, don’t get me wrong, we are both 100% supportive of their careers, and have made the commitment to travel with them in hopes of retaining somewhat of a family structure for our kiddos. We get to travel each year, living in some of the most incredible places–we get to meet people all over the world–our children get to see things that some people never see in a lifetime…sounds great, right? Well, let me tell you, while there are some high points, there are also many obstacles that we must overcome on a regular basis. For example, I am currently living in a one bedroom residential hotel with a 1 year old and a five year old. There is no stove. I have two hotplates and a microwave to work with, and tonight it took me an hour to get the water to boil so that I could make pasta. My five year old is sleeping on a roll-away bed in the “living room” because the foldout mattress is as thick as a piece of construction paper. My one year old is sleeping in a pimped out pack n’ play. I say pimped out because we have done our best to make it comfy with the softest blankets we could find. (Crunchy hotel-style comforters won’t cut it!) We have been here for two weeks and the longest she has slept in her own makeshift “bed” is about 4 hours. (That means I have a baby trying to attach to my boob for the other 4 hours in the night, aarrggghhhhh!) So the depressing part is that we went home this weekend, and for the two nights in her crib she slept NINE HOURS!! Yes NINE HOURS!! I actually had to wake her up this morning so that we could head back to our current, temporary home.
I just got unpacked (I felt like I was in college again because I took all of our dirty clothes home to do wash) and couldn’t wait to get started on my daily Happy Hour with happy hour mom. That’s when I found the most incredible glimmer of hope. I was looking through some of my bookmarked sites and came across BloomBaby.com. You will know exactly what I am talking about when you check out the alma. With a simple design and 5 super chic colors to choose from, these bassi-cribs will fit into any room–literally. Measuring a mere 37x20x33″, alma gives me what I have been looking for for the past 5 years. I know we are not the only family living in small quarters and moving often either. We all settle for the pack n’ play, after all who wants to assemble a crib for one, two, or even three weeks stints away from home? Okay, get ready for this one–I had to double check to make sure this was right–The alma just unfolds and clicks into place. 1-2-3, no assembly required. Say what?! I think it took me longer to get Kira’s Disney Princess Barbie out of the box for Christmas!
Now I haven’t tried the alma YET, but I think I am sold. If there is anything that might help my baby girl sleep more soundly and feel at home, I’m in. Especially since the price is pretty affordable. At first I thought $400 might be a little steep, but not if you don’t have to get the pack n’ play AND a bassinet–ends up costing you about the same, if not less. Even if we weren’t constantly on the move I think one of these would be great for Nana’s house. Or, for all of you co-sleeper fans out there, imagine being able to experience the convenience of a bassinet until the age of 2! I will let you all know how it goes if we have the opportunity to pick an alma for baby girl. Or if you have one of these, please let us know what you think of YOURS!
