It has been an interesting couple weeks on ABC’s “The View” as Whoopi takes a break from the table to film a new movie. I was anxious to watch as men joined the table, not only as guest hosts, but to take the driver’s seat and moderate the discussion. I am even more anxious to see them leave. I just hope they are able to get their feet out of their mouths so that they can get out of the studio as quickly as possible. Well, maybe that is a tad extreme, but I am not feeling the dynamics with men in control. D.L. Hughley moderated yesterday’s show, and I was appalled and frankly, didn’t find him funny at all. I would be disgusted if I were his wife, especially after he said (not a direct quote, but you will get the gist) that every man wants a woman with “a little hooker in her.” Really? Now you have heard that a man wants a woman with a little “freak” in her, and Sherri oh so kindly tried to suggest that this is what D.L. meant to say, however I don’t buy it. He was referring to the fact that a study has shown that women with lower IQs tend to go for men who have money. He basically said he doesn’t care how smart you are (with a brief disclaimer that his wife was intelligent) as long as you look good and know how to “satisfy” him. That as long as a woman is taking care of his needs, he doesn’t care if she married him for his money–he’s willing to pay. Joke or not, I thought the entire discussion was insulting and appalling, and I know I am not alone. The audience members seemed to be laughing less and less, and there was a different vibe as the convo wore on. It was my understanding that the viewers of the show were middle-aged women, interested in intelligent discussions, currents trends, and a review of current media events and gossip–not hookers looking to nail a rich guy.
So while this episode and “hooker” discussion really doesn’t matter in the large scheme of things for the folks over at “The View” I can’t imagine it would be great for ratings if it were a daily issue. Precisely why these men need to stick to shows with a more appropriate audiences for their taste. Most likely not a morning talk show geared towards women…
