Many of you have probably read our previous post on Cupcake Burgers, courtesy of Bakerella–one of my all time favorite posts/crafts/desserts EVER featured here on HHM. I have been dying to try it out myself, and what better time than for a Fourth of July celebration at my daughter’s school. Originally introduced as a Father’s Day barbecue treat, I added to Bakerella‘s blank printable template so that it would be a 4th of July themed craft/dessert. We had so much fun! I took a sample of the final product to show the kids, but left all of the “buns,” “patties,” and “condiments,” separate so that the kiddos could have fun making their own burgers. I had the “french fries” already made, and the name tags ready to go so that each child could pace the tooth pick in the top of the burger and each would have their own little treat after they ate lunch.

The best part was that the kids thought they were real burgers. They were saying things like…

“I don’t like mustard!” –it was yellow “mustard” frosting

“I don’t want to put meat on my cupcake!”–it was a yummy brownie

“I don’t like tomatoes!”–they were chopped up red Gummie Bears

“I don’t want lettuce, yuck!”–they were green coconut flakes

I thought it was adorable that these 4 and 5 year olds thought they were really little mini burgers. They had a great time, and the cupcakes were absolutely delicious! I mean seriously yummy. I followed Bakerella’s directions for the most part, with my own little twist here and there. For the cupcakes I used two tablespoons of batter in each paper wrapper and it made the perfect sized “buns” with one cut down the middle. I also added the dyed coconut flakes for lettuce, and the cupcake toppers to hold the burgers together and label them for the kids.Such a great project, fun for the whole family!!
