The American Academy of Dermatology has several Public Service Announcements released to help inform the public the dangers of tanning. Be it bathing in the sun by the pool, or laying in a tanning bed for 10 minutes, your are not sfe from the dangerous side effects. I thought back to my high school years as I watched this video, and man do I wish I knew then what I know now.
If that wasn’t enough, read the following excerpt from SkinCancer.org:
Tanning is the skin’s reaction to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. When skin is exposed to UV rays, cells called melanocytes produce the brown pigment melanin, which darkens the cells of the epidermis. This darkening of the skin cells is the skin’s natural – if imperfect – defense against further damage from UV radiation.
The sun’s UV rays damage the DNA of the skin’s epidermal cells, triggering enzymes that race to repair the damage. However, these enzymes do not always repair the DNA successfully, and all this unrepaired damage can lead to mutations that increase the risk of skin cancer. Also, repeated unprotected sun exposure can cause photoaging – wrinkles, sagging skin, and spots associated with sun damage. [read more]
Whether or not this information sinks in or inspires you to alter your tanning methods is up to you, but it should at least make you think. For many years, it came down to what was more important to you–your health, or your appearance–but now there are many products available as an alternative. You can have a golden, bronze tan from the comfort of your home at great prices. Check out these awesome products that were featured on ABC’s “The View.” Have you tried them?
