Genoveva Christoff was one of the four regional designers selected to work with Simon Doonan for the Diet Pepsi Style Studio Show. Doonan, the style commentator for the evening and creative director for the event, concepted three looks for each of the designers to develop and Genoveva did a fabulous job bringing a refreshing look to the runway, and offering a unique hometown perspective. Born and raised in Macedonia, Genoveva moved to the United States seven years ago and now lives in Columbus, Ohio with her husband and 5 year old son. When asked if it is a challenge to balance career and family, Genoveva acknowledged that some days offer more challenges than others, but with the help of her husband and mother-n-law, they are able to work through it. I know the rest of us moms can relate, and it was great to hear her talk about the ups and downs as a work-at-home mom. So many of us can relate!
Of the three looks concepted by Simon Doonan–fierce animal prints, office chic avant-garde workwear, and metallic finishes inspired by the sleek Diet Pepsi can–Genoveva Christoff shared that the avant-garde workwear was her favorite look to work on. She really felt like it was a good challenge and an opportunity for her to step outside her comfort zone and create a fun, flirty, unique look. She jokingly said, “It’s not very often we get to see people dressed like Lady Gaga!” (referring to life in Ohio). While Christoff jokes about stepping out of her comfort zone, she is no stranger to praise and success as a designer, having already concepted designs major brands Ralph Lauren, Bloomingdales, Henri Bendel, Chico’s, White House/Black Market, Victoria’s Secret, DSW, Armani, and L’Oreal/Lancome, yet Christoff was thrilled and honored to have this opportunity with Diet Pepsi.
I will have to say, as much as Toni and I enjoyed seeing her looks on the runway and at the Diet Pepsi Refresh Studio throughout the week, we truly enjoyed the time we had to get to know Genoveva and the other designers on a more personal level. In fact, we bumped into her at Christian Cota’s Presentation and I loved getting her take on his Fall 2012 Collection. The two of us were enamored with the beautiful designs, opposing textures, and the emotional connection between the models, the gorgeous collection, and those of us in the room–it was a true work of art. The picture shown above is one I snapped at the Cota Presentation after admiring the detail in her blouse–and yes, of course she designed it herself! Genoveva Christoff is wonderfully sweet, and I can’t wait to stay in touch and see what her artistic talent has in store for us in the future. Best of luck!
Spoken like a true happy hour mom, this is what Genoveva Christoff had to say:
“I think it’s important for every woman to put time on themselves. Just five to ten minutes a day, because when you look good, and you feel good, it makes you look stronger and more confident.”
