If you own a television, computer or radio, there is a good chance you heard about (or watched) Alicia Silverstone’s latest home video featuring her son “baby bear” eating chewed up food from her mouth (premastication at its finest). It is incredible how this story has hit the media, and blogs, as it seems moms and naysayers have plenty to say–so of course I couldn’t pass on the opportunity to share my opinion. While I never made a point of chewing up every bite and feeding it to my girls, I have definitely found myself biting food into smaller pieces or breaking it up with my teeth to make it easier for them to swallow here and there. I think it is amusing to see some of the comments, both supportive and critical, especially because so many moms have probably done this to a certain degree without even realizing it. Yes Ms. Silverstone has taken it to practice on what seems to be a more regular basis, and has gotten people talking. However, if you have ever eaten mochi, I guarantee you would be chewing it up too!
While living in Japan this past year, mochi was a regular dish for many of our friends. To experience the culture and enjoy the tradition, we had mochi on New Years Day 2012, and I can tell you with certainty that it is the chewiest food I have ever eaten!! It is a glutinous rice that is pounded (and pounded, and pounded) into a paste and shaped. Even as an adult trying it for the first time, I was warned to make sure I chewed the mochi well, because it is very sticky and easy to choke on. While I have a feeling mochi isn’t the only thing Alicia Silverstone has chewed up for her son, I definitely understand!
