the ultimate independence day bash

Independence Day is the peak of the summer. It’s hard to believe that it is already here. Since the fourth of July holiday falls on a Wednesday this year it is hard to assume how everyone will be celebrating.  Most will have the day free from work and will be able to partake in festive activities as usual. But this is  a popular time of year for families to take long vacations as well.

A Fourth of July bash doesn’t have to be a formal affair where you bring out the fine china. It doesn’t mean it automatically has to equal burgers and brats, either. If that is a tradition, go for it. Just know that the possibilities are endless. If the weather is right than an outdoor party may be right up your alley.  You won’t have to worry about kids spilling barbeque sauce all over your good rugs. A buffet menu is a great place to start an outdoor meal because friends and family can bring their own favorites. Plus, many of the items can be prepared in advance and clean up is much quicker with festive paper dinnerware. Let’s get real the 4th of July is a time for the whole family to have fun and be together. Not even grandma should spend their holiday cooking and cleaning.

Whether you are partying pre, post or all holiday long, solo or with friends and family there are a few things everyone should have at  America’s birthday party.

RED, WHITE and BLUE

Décor-If your main living space can handle festive 4th of July colors add a couple throw pillows or a new piece of art on your wall.

Flags- Show your patriotic side by displaying an American flag.

Clothing- Nautical is still a hot trend this summer so it’s a natural fit. White shorts, a cute navy tank and some hot red shoes will work for the next couple of months.

GREAT FOOD AND DRINKS

Hot dog and hamburger buffet- Not a must but a very traditional menu for this holiday.

Ice cream social-Feature a spread of red, white and blue toppings.

Watermelon- The sweet, juicy taste of watermelon equals summer in my mind.

Ribs and chicken-Fire up the grill!

Coleslaw/salads-Who doesn’t love broccoli slaw, potato salad or macaroni salad next to their barbeque?

Festive drinks- Red, white and blue sangrias?

Special sauces- bring out the good stuff. Try your latest homemade barbecue sauce on your friends and family.

Local ingredients- celebrate America by celebrating local foods.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Beach volleyball- Outdoor team activities are fun for just about everyone. (Don’t forget the sunscreen)

Water sports-Does lying on a floating raft count as a sport? If you are more of an adventurous type rent jet skis, or try waterskiing.

Boating- Pack a picnic and cruise a nearby lake or ocean.

Sparklers- Adults young and old will always love the sight of sparklers.

Campfires- The perfect way to view fireworks is in front of your own campfire while roasting marshmallows.

Family golf tournament- Enjoy some competition with a best ball tourney.

Happy Fourth of July Happy Hour Mommas!
