DOUBLE LIFE SYNDROME

My name is Dana. I am an LA mom and live a double life. Not in the sense of being an espionage agent or a part of an undercover operation (at least that would be exciting!) but that of being a wife and a mom of three kids while at the same time working as a professional producer/writer/director in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles, CA. The two worlds couldn’t be more different.

The entertainment industry is full of tight deadlines, 14 -18 hour days on set, networking lunches, schmoozing, red carpet events and looking good.  Mommy-hood is full of sleepless nights, spit up on your already soiled outfit, meltdowns and wondering why you haven’t had a chance to take a shower in 2 days. Let’s face it, your young toddler doesn’t care what you look like — you’re mom and he/she loves you just the way you are! Although as I sit here writing this, a few similarities are coming to mind. I must say that at times the talent I’m directing feels like I’m playing three ring circus at home with my kids and the moaning and whining of the celebrities I’ve interviewed seems to be pretty concurrent with small children. But overall, the worlds are pretty unique and separate.

Now comes a few more twists, my husband works from home (which apparently at this point seems to have more downs then “ups”) and I have a blended family.   My husband has two children from his previous marriage so I have two step children 8 and 11.   My own son from my previous marriage is just shy of entering elementary school. Split schedules with the ex’s, figuring out which household a favorite toy or piece of clothing has landed and dealing with legal and medical issues –You’d almost need a personal assistant keeping track of all of this! Schedules and activities are constantly changing and it’s a wonder we can keep everything straight.

I have decided to start blogging about this not only because I’m a writer and I have so  many thoughts cluttering my head that I feel I must get onto paper, but because so many moms out there lead this “double life”.  I feel an inherent need to share my insights and thoughts in hopes that at least one person out there might benefit from my advice or learn from my mistakes.   Being at home with children and raising a family compared to work life causes us to have to switch gears, sometimes several times a day especially if you’re working from home like I currently am.  It’s a struggle, but at the end of the day, we all seem to manage somehow. Who are we?  Wife, doctor, nurse, mom, employee, seamstress, cook, go getter of all things lost?  It can change at a blink of an eye.

Experts and Philosophers tell us life is too short and we must savor everyday we have but that can be very difficult when we’re stressed to the max with kids, piles of laundry and figuring out what you’re going to make for picky kids to eat! Hopefully my blogs will entertain, inspire, maybe give an insight or two – or just give readers a quick laugh or snicker.    Enjoy!
